It’s finally that time: your child has been signed up for their first swimming lessons! Whether your child is excited to get started learning to swim or has shown a little bit of reluctance, it is likely that you have a fair amount of questions. As parents, we all want the best for our children and you want to do everything you can to prepare them for this exciting new experience. At H2.O Aquatics, we know the importance of being prepared and it is our goal to make learning to swim a fun, rewarding experience for you and your child. Here are a few tips on what to expect on your child’s first day of swimming lessons.
What to Bring to Your Child’s First Swimming Lesson
The very first step in being well-prepared for your child’s first day of swimming lessons is to make sure you bring along everything they’ll need. Luckily, there isn’t too much to worry about here aside from the obvious.
Your child will, of course, need to bring their swimsuit. To ensure everything goes as smoothly as possible (especially if your child is fairly young), make sure that their swimsuit fits them comfortably. The first day of swimming lessons can be an overwhelming process for some children and you’ll want to do everything you can, as their parent, to limit unnecessary distractions.
If your child has shown a little bit of discontent with the idea of starting their swimming lessons, take a trip to the store ahead of their first day and get them excited by letting them pick out their own swimsuit. You may be surprised to find how quickly your child starts to view their swimming lessons as the fun experience that it is just by getting to pick out their own special swimsuit.
It is also a good idea to bring a pair of deck shoes along so that your child can walk around safely and comfortably when they aren’t actively inside the pool.
Will My Child Be Safe on Their First Day of Swimming Lessons?
At H2.0 Aquatics, the safety of your child is our primary concern. Our swim instructors take every possible action to make sure that your child is completely safe during their swimming lessons. We will make sure that your child is under direct adult supervision 100% of the time so that nothing unexpected occurs.
We are trained professionals when it comes to swimming lessons and our staff is more than capable of maintaining the safety of your child throughout the entire duration of their lessons. We have set safety standards that are in place to make sure that every child not only feels safe during their lessons but is safe the entire time. We believe that your child’s swimming lessons should be a fun experience but that doesn’t mean we won’t operate with their safety at the forefront of our efforts.
What if My Child is Scared to Start Swimming?
Swimming lessons are one of the most rewarding learning experiences in the life of a child and while our swimming instructors do everything they can to make sure your child has fun, we are experienced working with children who are a little hesitant to start.
It is perfectly natural for your child to be scared to start swimming but this doesn’t mean that they can’t overcome their fear and become completely comfortable in the water. While swim lessons are an educative experience, that doesn’t mean that they can’t be fun. Our swim instructors are very experienced working with children that are hesitant about the process and we believe that soothing a child’s fear is all about taking the right approach and exhibiting patience. We also recommend that you stay throughout the entirety of your child’s first swim lesson as this will offer them that extra bit of comfort- especially if they aren’t used to being on their own.
It may be a little frustrating to you as a parent when your child is afraid but it is incredibly important to address these fears with your child and do what you can to comfort them. Children perform best when learning to swim when they feel supported by their swim instructors and you, as their parent. Take care not to express your frustration if your child is afraid to learn. Instead, ask them what scares them about swimming and do your best to explain that they will be safe and that the experience will be fun if they give it a chance. Our swim instructors will work alongside you to reassure your child- from the moment you arrive on the first day of swim lessons to your child’s last day of lessons.
What if My Child Doesn’t Calm Down?
It is extremely common for there to be a few tears on the first day of swimming lessons. New experiences can be a struggle for many children and a fear of the unknown can be overwhelming at times. If your child ends up crying during their first day of swim lessons, don’t worry- this is a perfectly natural reaction and our instructors have seen it many times before.
It is important that you congratulate your child when they behave and accomplish even the smallest of goals during their swim lessons. It is a particularly huge accomplishment for a child to remain in the pool throughout the entirety of their swimming lesson so make sure you tell them how proud you are!
Be your child’s cheerleader and let them know that their swim lessons can be fun and rewarding. If your child is particularly upset, praise them for the smallest victories. Did your child manage to sit on the side of the pool with their feet in the water for a certain amount of time? GREAT! Tell them how proud you are of them. Did your child manage to get in to the pool with their instructor? AWESOME! Let them know how happy you are to see them facing their fears.
Don’t expect for your child’s first day of swim lessons to be completely smooth sailing. While our swim instructors will do everything we can to calm your child and introduce them to swimming in a way that shows them that there isn’t anything to be afraid of, your child will benefit even more from having you there on the sidelines showing your love and support. With a little bit of patience and persistence, your child will be thrilled to attend their swimming lessons in no time!
